Elizabeth House is the newest shelter site for Charlotte Family Housing. After months of planning and hard work, Elizabeth House opened its doors to families on March 3, 2013. The house, located at 715 Hawthorne Lane, is in close proximity to our main office and our other two shelters. Elizabeth House can house up to four families at a time, and replaces the Family Promise weekly rotating church model we previously used. Our new shelter will provide families with a stable environment where important family routines like doing homework, completing chores and following bedtime happen at the same time, in the same location, each day. A simple task, like children knowing where to find their pillow or favorite book, can mitigate some of the trauma the children suffer when they are homeless. This consistency will help discourage behavioral issues and encourage positive coping mechanisms for children already in a vulnerable situation, while also providing the space for relationship-building, mentoring and support.
The following were overheard the first day that our families moved in:
“Finally, I can potty train Christopher.”
“Ooh, I get to take a bath tonight!”
“I can cook? Ooh, I am going to make me some fried fish.”
We welcome our families into Elizabeth House!
