Our Strategy
Our focused model at Charlotte Family Housing (CFH) leverages three critical methods to help empower the working families experiencing homelessness that we serve to achieve life-long success, stability, and self-sufficiency:
Housing families:
Families begin their journey to upward economic mobility in CFH's Shelter Phase. Families can then concentrate on short-term and long-term goals without worrying about where their children will sleep each night. Over 60% of the individuals CFH serves are children and we work hard to make our families feel "at home" in our shelter facility. CFH assists families moving out of the shelter phase to obtain transitional subsidized housing, ultimately preparing them for long-term sustainable and unsubsidized housing within a year or two. Housing resource coordinators connect families with housing through a network of nearly 70 partner housing providers in 21 zip codes throughout Mecklenburg County.

Partnership & Counseling:
In collaboration with community several partners, CFH's Masters-level clinical social workers provide wraparound supportive services for each family. They address barriers to family stability and facilitate pathways to financial literacy, education, health and wellness, and job readiness. CFH is a trauma-informed agency that employs nationally recognized practices to help families heal from the trauma of poverty and homelessness. Trauma affects how families access and respond to services and, as a result, they need specific, tailored interventions. CFH organizes our services in ways that address and mitigate the effects of traumatic stress.

Empowering Tools:
CFH employs a two-generation approach focused on fostering independence instead of enabling dependence. Through social worker-led programming and counseling, financial literacy training for parents and children, collaboration with community partners, and volunteer support, all family members over 18 years of age gain access to living-wage employment, establish financial goals, and achieve long- term financial stability.
